Layton Stationmaster Made a Serving Brother

Alfred Spencer, Stationmaster at Layton, near Blackpool in the 1950s.THE stationmaster of Layton, Mr Alfred Spencer, has been made a Serving Brother of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in recognition of his long and meritorious service for the ambulance movement.

He is to attend an investiture at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, on March 20. to receive his award from Lord Wakehurst, Lord Prior of the Order, and Governor General of Northern Ireland. Mr. Spencer. who has been at Layton for seven years, has served the St.John movement Mr. A. Spencer with the railways for 34 years as team captain, class secretary, and class instructor.

Five years ago he became secretary for the North-west Lancashire district of the railways and three years ago he was made an honorary member of the Order. In 1940 he gained a certificate of merit for his work during the bombing of Chatburn.
