The son of Alderman Muirhead of Manchester, he was born in 1855, educated privately and made an associate of A.R.I.B.A. in 1882. He was a member of the Manchester Society of Architects.

He went on to design the cricket pavilions at the Kennington Oval (completed 1898) and Old Trafford (completed 1895), the Mission Hall & Conservative Club at Crumpsall and 'many town and country residences.'

Locally, he designed the Public Offices, Clifton Drive, St.Annes (completed 1902), the Thursby Convalescent Home  in the dunes between St.Annes & Blackpool (completed 1905) and the Parish Rooms, Headroomgate Road (completed 1910).  

He was a keen sportsman, interested in cricket and football. He was a member of the Council of the Lytham & St.Annes Golf Club.

His offices were at 31, Market Street, Manchester and Orchard Road, St.Annes-on-Sea. He also had a house, in St. Annes called 'Dunham', later moving to 'Kennerley', 31 Wood street.
